When I Work Launches Hourly Workforce Index - Benchmarking Real-Time Hourly Workforce Activity Across Minnesota

Global physical distancing has impacted hourly workplaces, frontline workers and countless businesses in unimaginable ways. Minneapolis based When I Work, an hourly workforce management platform that helps manage employee schedules, time clocks, and attendance for 150,000 hourly workplaces, with more than one million employees nationwide, has measured that impact first-hand, capturing real-time data demonstrating how and what hourly workplaces are doing to manage through COVID-19.

When I Work today launches its new interactive Hourly Workforce Index, an embeddable map that tracks hourly workforce activity in the hospitality, restaurant and retail industries, with day-by-day, week-by-week real-time tracking across Minnesota.

The Hourly Workforce Index shows growth or decline in hours worked at workplaces in Minnesota, capturing comprehensive real-time employment activity data, delivering deep statistical insights into the impact of the current crisis, and a glimpse at one new approach businesses are using to schedule their hourly employees as they reopen.

When I Work will be updating the Index to include statistics from hourly workplaces across the U.S and Canada over the coming weeks, and the Index will remain accessible to all as people seek to track the impact of workplaces re-opening and operating in new ways.

"Many businesses have dramatically changed operations and how they are planning for the future. Our index shows, for example, a 75 percent reduction in hourly workplace operations following the initial impact of COVID-19-and a 60 percent continued reduction today as they work to adapt," says Chad Halvorson, founder and CEO, When I Work.

But, businesses are planning for the future, and adapting to flexibility, autonomy, and employee empowerment in new ways. Hourly workplaces that are open or planning a reopening have accelerated their reinvention of operations- including through a service When I Work provides: flexible self-scheduling - where a manager can define scheduling needs based on demand, allowing employees to select, trade, and fill shifts themselves. With this method, businesses are able to fill shifts based on near-term needs, and quickly increase or decrease capacity within uncertain environments of demand, including new workplace operations like delivery and curbside pickup. As businesses come online, employees will appreciate the ability to quickly pick up shifts that best fit their increasingly dynamic availability.

"Prior to the pandemic the number of hourly workplaces adopting flexible self-scheduling was growing at a rate of 20 percent annually," adds Halvorson. "Since early March, we've seen a 60 percent monthly increase in flexibly scheduled hours for food service; and just last month, a 130 percent increase in retail, which had been slower to adapt to this approach in the past."

The Hourly Workforce Index from When I Work is an economic benchmark that brings attention to how the hourly workforce is faring across geographies. Based on hundreds of millions of hours worked and millions of hourly employees, When I Work has amassed a unique dataset that can be used to uncover economic trends and insights.
