Better Training & Support Holds Key to Excellent WFM

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk, Content Management

Companies today want to improve the bottom line and are on a constant hunt for ways to remain successful. Management must stay on the cutting edge of the latest technologies and strategies to ensure they are meeting the needs of customers and employees.

According to a new Global Leadership Survey however, there is a great lack of planning for career development and training within companies today. Most employees said they have to get their training and advancement skills just from being on the job. This is concerning because the past has proven that companies that lack investment in talent management programs or who are not helping employees to grow, will fail.

"Not only is talent management and training an integral part of workforce development, it's proven to be a driving factor in the long-term growth and success of an organization,” Emily He CMO at Saba (News - Alert), a provider of cloud-based intelligent talent management solutions and which released the report, said.

One company that is focusing on growth of its workforce is Dell (News - Alert). It offers flexible online programs that can be personalized for career development for every one of their employees.

Using solutions from Saba, Dell is able to measure, learn and align with the needs of its employees.

"Every end-user wants a unique experience, customized just for them, whether you're a Millennial, a Gen X or a Baby Boomer like myself, you want to feel the user experience is designed specifically for you,” Charles Atkins, director of global learning and development at Dell, said.

Not only did the study uncover that only 13 percent of companies worldwide invest in intelligent management programs for further employee growth, but alarmingly, of those companies, only 35 percent are actually offering career development opportunities online.  This is concerning because of the growing Millennial base making its way into the workforce now.

According to Dan Schwabel, Founder of workplacetrends.com, the Millennial generation is aggressive and wants development opportunities from the companies it chooses to work for. This type of worker, unlike those in the past, is even comfortable getting the training and tracking tools about their career development online. This new piece of data is especially critical for businesses as they seek ways to get on board with this pressing need. The online channel can be easier to manage and maintain while still delivering the value add the up and coming workforce is demanding.
